The Ted Mitchell Memorial Scholarship commemorates Theodore R. Mitchell, a lifelong educator and supporter of high school athletics.
Ted Mitchell began his teaching career at Tamalpais High School in 1956 as an English teacher and coach, and worked at Tam until his retirement in 1987. Between 1956 and 1987, he served as counselor, dean, and then principal. Throughout his career, Ted Mitchell remained a supporter of high school athletics in Marin County.
In addition to his work as a teacher and coach at Tam, Ted Mitchell was a longtime sports announcer for KTIM radio. As a collegian, he played baseball and football and as a coach passed along his love of sports to the young men and women with whom he worked.
In each of these roles, Ted Mitchell maintained a belief in the profound ability of sport to engage and galvanize the human spirit. In 1990, Ted Mitchell was elected to the Marin County Athletic League Hall of Fame.
When Ted died in 1993, his beloved widow, Genevieve, and their three sons elected to honor his memory with a scholarship honoring Marin County’s student-athlete by providing a $1,500 scholarship to two Marin County student-athletes, one female and one male. When Genevieve died in 2008, the scholarship was continued in honor of both Ted and Genevieve. The scholarship is given every year to two high school seniors who intend to continue their education and make an enduring contribution to the lives of others.
